Flood situation continues to be grim in many parts of county
New Delhi, July 15 (RNI): The flood situation in Assam remains grim as new areas have been inundated. Several rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are maintaining a rising trend. Surging water has badly affected vehicular movement in the state as floods have submerged several important roads.

Around 90,000 hectares of cropland, fisheries, roads, bridges, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, educational institutes and residential areas have been damaged. Land erosion has also made the situation critical.

Over 26 lakh people are reeling under floods in 28 districts. Barpeta, Morigaon and Dhubri are among the worst-hit. Relief camps have been set up in various districts for the displaced people. NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed in search and rescue works.

Assam is witnessing such devastating floods after the gap of 2 to 3 years. Several civil society organizations have extended all possible help to the affected people.

Meanwhile, Congress MPs from Assam protested in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Parliament premises over the flood situation in the state.

They are demanding that the floods be declared a National Problem and sought immediate release of central assistance for the victims.

Senior party leader Sanjay Singh told media that there should be a permanent solution to meet the flood situation in the country.

The MPs were carrying placards demanding the central government to combat the floods in Assam in a war footing manner.

In Bihar, the flood situation continues to be grim in 10 districts. The Central Water Commission said Bagmati, Gandak, Mahananda, Kamla, Balan and Lalbakeya rivers are flowing above the danger mark due to heavy rain in catchment areas.

This has caused widespread devastation and inundation in Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Madhubani and East Champaran district. 32 deaths have, so far, been reported in the flood-affected areas and many are feared swept away.

Due to the heavy pressure of water and fast current in swollen rivers, protective embankments have collapsed at several places in North Bihar.

More than 18 lakh people in 55 blocks are affected. Over 40,000 people have taken shelter in relief camps.

Meanwhile, noisy scenes were witnessed in the Bihar Legislative Assembly today. Main opposition RJD members raised slogan against state government alleging failure of state machinery to tackle with the flood situation.

In Mizoram, incessant rain continues to wreak havoc in various part of the state.

Due to incessant rains and floods, six persons have lost their lives and more than 1,000 families have been displaced. They have taken shelter in temporary relief camps.

State administration is providing relief materials to the families. Landslides and floods have been reported from some places damaging houses, disrupting communication and electricity supply. Most affected districts are Lunglei and Lawngtlai.

More than 500 houses in Tlabung and adjoining areas in South Mizoram are affected by the flood. Around 600 families have been evacuated.

Incessant rain across Meghalaya for the last seven days and rising waters of two rivers have flooded the plains of West Garo Hills district.

Officials today said, more than one lakh people are affected. Rising waters of the Brahmaputra and the Jinjiram rivers, both flowing from Assam, submerged the low-lying areas of the district.

Low-lying areas of the state's capital city Shillong were also flooded.

Efforts are on to evacuate the flood victims and take them to safer locations.

The state government has announced seven days of Gratuitous Relief for the flood-affected people of West Garo Hills district.
